United Way of South Central Indiana Tornado Relief Efforts
October 28, 2025 -- On May 16, 2025, severe storms and multiple tornadoes—reaching up to an EF-2—moved through south central Indiana, bringing destructive winds and large hail. The storms caused significant damage across Bartholomew, Brown, Greene, Monroe, and Sullivan Counties, disrupting homes, businesses, and essential services throughout the region.
In Greene County alone, 170 households experienced damage to their homes or businesses. An additional 88 households were impacted in Monroe County and 20 in Brown County. Thousands of residents were left without electricity or phone service as power lines and cell towers were damaged or destroyed. Homes lost roofs, barns collapsed, vehicles were damaged, and many families faced immediate and unexpected needs.
In response, United Way of South Central Indiana partnered with Monroe County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) and Greene County officials to establish a Disaster Relief Fund. The fund was designed to provide timely, flexible support to individuals and families affected by the storms, with an immediate focus on food, water, and essential supplies.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, more than $70,000 was raised and distributed to those impacted. These funds -- in addition to United Way case managers -- have supported approximately 150 households through community-based response efforts, helping provide emergency food, essential personal items, and supplies needed in the days following the storms. For many families—particularly those without adequate insurance coverage—this assistance helped bridge a critical gap during a time of uncertainty and recovery.
This response reflects the role United Way of South Central Indiana plays in times of crisis and beyond. By bringing partners together and responding to evolving community needs, United Way helps ensure support is available when it is needed most—whether through disaster relief, free tax preparation, early childhood programs, or other initiatives that strengthen our region year-round.
