When children consistently miss school in the early grades, the effects can last a lifetime—lower reading proficiency, reduced graduation rates, and fewer opportunities in adulthood. That’s why United Way of South Central Indiana is partnering with local schools, Families Forever, and county justice systems to help students and families overcome the barriers that keep them from attending school.
Our Truancy Case Management Program focuses on K–2 students in Lawrence and Greene Counties who are experiencing chronic absenteeism. Families are connected to trained case managers who provide consistent, trauma-informed support—helping address challenges such as transportation issues, housing instability, family trauma, and access to mental health care.
This work is about more than just attendance. It’s about shifting family culture, sparking generational change, and helping families become stable and thriving. Students build coping skills and emotional awareness, while families gain confidence, feel more supported, and are better equipped to navigate the systems that impact their daily lives.
Launched in Lawrence County in January of 2023, the program recently expanded into four Greene County school districts with funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. Early outcomes are promising -- the program achieved a 50% reduction in absences among participating students. Families also report feeling more connected to their schools and communities.
Thanks to grant support from Indiana United Ways, United Way is also leading a new research initiative in partnership with Indiana University School of Social Work. This effort will gather and analyze data—particularly in rural areas—to better understand and ultimately prevent early school disengagement.
By helping young children develop strong attendance habits and showing families that they are supported, this program advances Youth Opportunity, Healthy Community, and Community Resiliency—ensuring that every child has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.
The Truancy Program supports United Way of South Central Indiana’s mission to disrupt the cycle of poverty, help families stay safe and stable, and set kids up for success. By addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism, the program fosters stronger connections between families, schools, and community. This helps children show up, stay on track, and have a better chance at a strong future.
